RAS G-MIST Discussion Meeting

Twenty-Two Years of EISCAT: A Meeting in Memory of P.J.S.Williams

Society of Antiquaries Lecture Theatre, Burlington House

Friday 12th December 2003

Organizers: Dr Alan D Aylward (UCL: alan@apl.ucl.ac.uk)

Dr S Eleri Pryse (Aberystwyth: sep@aber.ac.uk)

Summary: The first data were taken by the EISCAT incoherent scatter radar in the summer of 1981, and the first Common Programme experiments proper performed in September and October of the same year. The late Phil Williams was the Assistant (Scientific) Director at EISCAT when this groundbreaking moment occurred, and he was involved in the many exciting experiments that were to follow with the new facility. In his memory, this meeting will look back on those 22 years of excellence; at the continuing cutting-edge science the facility is still performing; and to the future of the radar with which he was so closely associated.
